Axés of Blood and Hope

Abdias Nascimento (1914-2011) devoted himself entirely to the fight against racism. He fought on multiple fronts to gain people’s appreciation of the African culture and raise the self-esteem of the black people, as well as to disprove the notion that Brazil was a “racial democracy.” He was a playwright, poet, visual artist. He worked strategically with political-pressure groups and promoted educational actions and spaces of intellectual debate.

The extent of his actions is as amazing as the fact that he had to pioneer many of them. “Who has not felt,” he asks, “the atmosphere of loneliness and pessimism surrounding the inaugural gesture when all you have to support you is the power of a dream?.” Abdias knew how to resist the weaknesses of all the principles and create new things, “axés of blood and hope.”

This 32nd edition of the Ocupação project seeks to make Abdias’ extensive output known and figure out what legacy was left to these days. The exhibition brings together works of art and pieces from the collection of the Instituto de Pesquisas e Estudos Afro-Brasileiros [Afro-Brazilian Studies and Research Institute] (Ipeafro). Also, it is an integral part of a parallel program comprising performance conferences, dramatic readings, and book launches.

This content is now extended to include a print publication – with texts covering the diversity of Abdias areas of practice.
