Ocupação

Itaú Cultural reaches the ninth edition of its Ocupação project with a tribute to artist Flávio Império (1935-1985), who achieved greatness in the fields of architecture, set and costume design, and the visual arts. Part of the Ocupação Flávio Império, this publication includes statements from those who shared the artist’s career, choices, challenges and affections. There are also two texts written by him.

With a multifaceted production, Império set his gaze on the ways of life, survival and entertainment of the Brazilian people. He let himself be impregnated by the creation and folk art from various corners of the country. In his own way, he played an important role in social criticism and politics by means of his art.  Reflections on his work are found in the following texts, a tribute to this artist who left behind drawings of sets and costumes, prints, paintings, architectural designs – materials that make up the Flávio Império Collection, created with support from the Flávio Império Cultural Society, a partner of this exhibition.

The Ocupação Flávio Império also marks the start of the digitalization of documents and works of this artist, a project that has the support of this institute, and will include a website to make this material accessible to the general public.
