Ocupação

The time of culture is not chronological – and, therefore, the “new” is not necessarily in the present.

Looking back, more specifically to the 1930s, we see that Mário de Andrade the cultural manager was just as innovative as Mário de Andrade, the artist, or cultural agent.  Combining diversity of thought, interdisciplinarity, research and recordings, his performance as head of São Paulo’s Department of Culture between 1935 and 1938, are examples to be followed by those who work with cultural public policy nowadays.

We hope with this exhibition to highlight the sensibility, complexity and pioneering spirit that have characterized the activities – many of them implemented, others still to be discovered – of this lesser-known, but still fundamental facet of Mário de Andrade.

The exhibition is part of the Observatório Itaú Cultural program, which since 2006 has sought to promote reflections on the field of cultural management – being itself a mirror of the institute’s performance and history within the context of Brazilian society.
